Walter Peppel, 92, of East Stroudsburg, passed away peacefully late Thursday evening, May 25, 2017, at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg, Bethlehem, following a long illness.

Born in Tutzing, Bavaria, Germany, son of Max and Anni (Schoeffel) Peppel, he was a long-standing resident of Middle Smithfield Township.

Walter Peppel, 92, of East Stroudsburg, passed away peacefully late Thursday evening, May 25, 2017, at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg, Bethlehem, following a long illness.

Born in Tutzing, Bavaria, Germany, son of Max and Anni (Schoeffel) Peppel, he was a long-standing resident of Middle Smithfield Township.

After coming to the United States at the age of 11, he worked with his parents in farming activities, the restaurant business and travel agency services. Thereafter, he worked for Wyckoff's department store in the refrigerator service department. Soon, his interests turned to the machinist trade, working as a tool maker for Tru-Matic Machine and Tool Co. Subsequently, he started his own machine shop business, Elco Machine & Tool in East Stroudsburg. He offered precision machining for customers in the Pocono Mountains region. His fabrication of small parts were integral in industrial manufacturing systems and in finished industrial products.

Upon retirement, he created unique devices utilized in his pastimes of numerous home-improvement projects, and gardening berries and flowers.

In his younger years, he pursued stamp collecting, concentrating on the topical subject of flowers depicted on stamps from around the world. He was a former member of the Pocono Mountains Philatelic Society.

To all that knew him, he was a kind-hearted, honest man.

He leaves behind his wife, Katherine (Birken) Peppel, 93, whom he wed in 1951; his son, Peter Peppel and his wife, Mary Lu, of Nazareth; his daughter, Erika Kolstad and her husband, Jon, of Phoenix, Arizona, and Stroudsburg; and grandsons Justin Peppel of Philadelphia and Douglas Peppel of Wilmington, Delaware.





He was preceded in death by a younger brother at the age of 5, Erich Peppel.

Cremation done by Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home Inc., East Stroudsburg, with a private interment at Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg.
